About Us & The House Visiting new places and meeting new people has always been a passion for us. We first "stuck our thumbs out" in the early 80's and explored parts of Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor, going where the fancy took us. We met some fantastic people, saw some amazing places, experienced different ways of life and, as they say; "broadened our minds". Since then we've lived in various parts of Britain, itself rich in history, tradition, interesting people and diverse culture. After 15 years living "the good life", farming in Scotland, we decided it was time to hit the road again, travelling through Europe and heading South and East towards Asia. After 18 months we reached Bulgaria where we found beautiful and varied landscapes, vibrant towns and cities and warm, friendly, open-hearted people.
We enjoyed our time in Bulgaria very much and when we reached Veliko Tarnovo we knew this was the place we wanted to settle in.
When we found the house in Dr.Hristo Daskalov Street we were very excited and realised that this was a great house to share with other people. The idea of Phoenix Hostel was born. Many hands, as well as our own, worked to turn this family home into a hostel, without destroying its character, creating what you see now. The house, built between 1850 and 1860, has gone through many changes over the years. In 1999 it was designated a 'monument of architectural culture', preserving the facade we see today. Inside the house we discovered a plaque commemorating the annual conference of the RMC (Young Communist Workers), held here in 1936. The house, like the city, is full of unfolding history. We look forward to your visit and sharing it with you. To book your accomodation, click how to book. "Veliko Tarnovo, a big city small enough to enjoy."
